| Monica Behan The music and angelic voice of Monica Behan artfully blends folk, blues and jazz into memorable pop melodies that reflect the harmonic nature of who she is on and off the stage. Monica Goretti Behan was born in upstate New York in the Thousand Islands, the eighth child of nine. Monica entered the world of songwriting at the age of seven when she began translating the visions of her whimsical world outdoors and feelings inside onto the piano to create the miniature melodic tales that continue to characterize her songs. Carol King’s “Tapestry,” a thirteenth birthday gift from her brothers, shaped her early preference for folk rock… and inspired her writing. She also traces Neil Young, Rickie Lee Jones and Stevie Wonder as early influences strong melodies. Leading club owners to believe she was of age, Monica began performing live at 16. After high school she was invited to move to New York City by her godparents, Abbie Hoffman and Johanna Lawrenson who introduced her to old-time patrons of New York’s famous venue, “Max’s Kansas City” and the counterculture and arts community. Her “Song for Abbie” describes her enduring relationship with the activist after Abbie’s death in 1990. Monica continued to sing in the clubs of the city, including a performance at the Apollo Theater. RCA/High Street Records released her debut album Behan/Johnson including the lively ‘World Keeps Spinning Round” which became a Top 10 single on Triple AAA. She continues to develop a vast catalog of songs in pop/folk, jazz, funk and hip-hop traditions. Her music has been heard in films, such as “Big Hit” and on television shows, including “The Young and the Restless,” “King of Queens,” “Party of Five” and on Fox, Lifetime, CBS, UPN, TNT and Disney networks. www.myspace.com/monicabehan |
